Introduction to Haiphong

Haiphong is positioned third in size among the other cities in Vietnam, and it is the country’s third most populous city too. Its deep-water anchorage gives it the significance in the country.

The large maritime facilities enable smooth operations in the port. The nickname of the city is ‘The City of the Red Flame Trees’ that is derived from the many Delonix regia that are planted all over the city. The real meaning of the name Haiphong however is ‘Coastal Defence’. This city suffered greatly from the US Navy bombing back in the time of the Vietnam War. It was targeted because it was the only major port in the north of Vietnam.
