Introductions to Utrecht

The city of unparalleled vitality, filled with festivals, architecture, shops, museum and rich culture. No wonder, Utrecht is called as the beating heart of the Netherlands.

It is the oldest city in the country and the Romans built a castellum below a ford. Thus the name, Utrecht (below the ford) came into existence. The city was covered by the medieval walls built in 1130 AD but the walls were destroyed in the 19th century when the town planned to expand into new districts.
