Introductions to Redang Island

Redang Island is one of the largest islands off the east coast of Malaysia and is a paradise for diving, snorkelling and wildlife-watching.

Known simply as Redang or Pulau Redang in Malay, it is one of nine islands that form the Pulau Redang Marine Park.

The island can be reached from the towns of Kuala Terengganu and Merang via boats operated by local resorts. Alternatively, Berjaya Air operates services to the island direct from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

A huge number of species call the area home, but the marine park was originally set up to help preserve the sea turtles that nest on the island.

The island is considered by many to be one of the best diving and snorkelling spots in the whole of Malaysia. Managers of the marine park have installed buoys over the coral reefs off Redang, allowing divers to moor up a boat and take the plunge.

However, Redang is worth a visit for much more than just underwater activities. It’s a perfect destination for any lovers of the outdoors, offering opportunities for boating, jungle trekking and hill climbing. If you’d prefer to do something a little more relaxing, you’ll be equally well catered for.

There are numerous beautiful spots on the island that are just perfect for a picnic, while the variety of birds to be seen in the area will get the pulse racing and the shutter whirring for keen photographers.
