Astana, previously known as Akmola, Tselinograd and Akmolinsk has been the newest capital of Kazakhstan, declared by President Nazarbayev. As the second largest city in Kazakhstan, it is situated on the northern-central part of Kazakhstan on the banks of Ishim River. This semi-arid steppe sits at 350 metres above sea level.
