This majestic theatre with excellent acoustics hosts operas and music concerts even today. Another interesting place to visit is the Mercado Municipal market, which is the city’s main market where various items such as fish, poultry, meat, vegetables, fruits, wine etc. are available. It was also constructed during the rubber boom and has been modelled after the famous “Les Halles” market in Paris.
The opulence of the boom time is evident from yet another structure, the Rio Negro Palace, once the palace of a former governor that has now been transformed into a museum. Located within walking distance from the port, a visit to this place which provides free entry would be worthwhile.
The Manaus Zoo is another spot that is popular with the tourists. It has several animals that are native to the Amazon forest, many of them belonging to exotic species and some even belonging to the endangered category.
Generally, eco-tourists would venture out of Manaus to explore the Amazon forest. However, those who are keen to gain more knowledge about the Amazon environment while also getting to enjoy a walk on the trails while still in the urban area must seriously consider a visit to Bosque da Ciência or the Park of Science. This park is part of an initiative by the National Institute for Amazon Research to promote environmental education. The plan to preserve the local flora and fauna while also promoting scientific and environmental education appears to have worked quite well.
Outside the city
Adventure trips to the Amazon forests are quite popular among the eco-tourists who seek to get a first hand view of the flora and fauna. One may have to get the help of a reputed travel operator and traverse about 100 km from Manaus to get a good view of the virgin rain forest and wildlife. River trips on the Amazon are also quite popular, especially the one where people get to see the merging of the black waters of Rio Negro with the brown waters of the Rio Solimoes to form the Amazon. There are also some popular beaches along the river such as Ponta Negra and Praia da Lua that one can plan to visit.
