Introduction to Fortaleza

Fortaleza, the capital city of the state of Ceará appears to be an isolated area on the map of Brazil. However, it is one of the major cities and a business hub. It is actually the fifth largest metropolitan area in Brazil being home to more than 3 million people.

Although there aren’t too many places of historical interest in this city which is located in the North East part of Brazil, it area draws people from far and near for its wonderful beaches, cuisines, shopping, and popular night life. Its proximity to Europe and North America has helped it gain more tourism related business from those areas as well.

The origins of this city can be traced to the old fortress Nossa Senhora da Assunção that was built by the Dutch in 1649. It is said that the city spread out starting from this area. As Fortaleza prepares to play host to a few of the FIFA World Cup matches in 2014, the place is abuzz with a lot of activity. Especially noticeable are the improvements and new developments taking place in infrastructure, stadiums, and hospitality.
