La Paz is one of the world’s highest de facto capitals. The official Bolivian capital is Sucre; however, La Paz is home to most government departments. The buildings of La Paz line the periphery of the mountains. Far away on a clear day, the triple-peaked snowy Mount Illimani overlooks this city. It takes a bit to acclimatize the high altitude: the warm day temperatures and freezing night temperatures and the strong UV rays.
An extension of La Paz, El Alto attracts immigrants seeking work and this city is morphing as one of Latin America’s rapidly growing cities.
